These Wands are Antique Sculptures

Photo credit: historical photo of textile worker winding bobbins in a US cotton mill during the early 1900s. Photo provided by Library of Congress.

The handle of each wand is assembled with antique bobbins that were previously used in textile factories in Philadelphia during the early industrial revolution. These bobbins were used by our collective grandmothers to literally sew and weave the fabric of our country as far back as 100 years ago.

Artist Statement

Jeannie Seidel creates custom wands embedded with objects representing the invisible labor of women in society, both domestic and sacred across time. Each sculpture is assembled with antique industrial bobbins that were used to weave and sew the fabric of our country in textile mills 100 years ago, invoking the ancestral energy of our collective grandmothers. Many components are salvaged materials from the Resource Exchange with the overall composition suggesting that reverence does not have to be rigid and that history continues as a living story – one that can still surprise us and fill us with a sense of wonder.
